CONCEPT:

Catch the babies thrown out the windows of the burning building before they go SPLAT!

WHAT WENT WRONG:

Alot! My initial idea was to add some obstacles that would cause a game over or something, but I did not have time to get to that. I wanted to add more of the cute babies to catch but ran out of time as well. I didn't want to keep adding things and possibly cause an issue down the line and miss the deadline for submission. I also left in a few place holders and did not get a chance to make a larger background environment for aesthetics.

WHAT WENT RIGHT:

The fact that I made and submitted my first ever game I think that a lot went right. The previous Unity tutorials I took on YouTube and game design research I have done helped give me some initial resources to get started. I think having a good basic concept to start with help to set expectations. I also had help from my family to play test and give ideas, my daughter made the start screen and credits art, and I received some great help from CREATEURS SAN FRONTIERES as well on the GameJam Discord server.

WHAT I LEARNED:

I learned how to make a game on Unity, which was my goal for this week.  Everything that's in the game I learned for the first time. Besides the actual artwork and music for the start screen and end screens I had to figure everything out on the fly. Lots of trial and error. I know now that putting in the work to learn whether from YouTube, in person classes, books or playing games paid off when I was trying to figure something out. All those resources come in handy. I now realize how precious the time to study is.

WHAT I PLAN TO LEARN NEXT WEEK:

For next week, I plan to make a beer mixing game. The player adds different ingredients and gets a grade from a friend or date. Kind of like a beer tasting/dating sim game. I may try to make the game in 2D since I don't plan on having a character moving around much. May try some pixel art and focus on dialogue.

Kind regards,

SkyKatchr

Great work on the game!  I also think you covered a lot in this first week, getting the art work done for the main menu and animations are hard to do.  It is similar to the game I made 3 weeks ago but with asteroids.   In addition to what Justin recommended, I will suggest implementing both screen shake and stop hit whenever you catch an object or when an object hit the ground, this will add a lot to the player's feedback to their own actions.   Here's a 4 min video on hitstop:

Awesome thanks for the feedback CJ! I'll take a look at the video.

Good work! There's a lot going on here and I can see the systems you created.

My only suggestion for the game is to add a basket or paddle on top of the guys head so it's clear where players need to catch the cat/baby/dog. It's hard to tell where to line up the player to catch the object.

Also adding a drop shadow to the player character and falling objects would make it clearer where to position the player as well.

I've never played a 3D falling object game, so this was a cool idea

This being your first game, I think you covered a lot of bases. Audio, particles, and 3D controllers are not simple to handle and you've implemented a lot of systems here.

Thaks for the feedback and hosting the Jam!
